Final Benevolence Giving for 2011

The tables below show the final allocation of the C+C budget for 2011 and the results from the special offerings taken during the year. We were $8 short of our budget because of a clerical in determining the remaining available money in December. However, all of our core missions were maintained in 2011 and additional support was provided for Immigration Support, Save Our Community Hospitals (SOCH), a gay/lesbian support center (PERSAD), and the Camp Crestfield Buiolding Fund. In addition, the special offerings were strong again this year. The Sixth Church share of the Peacemaking offering (25%) , along with a carry-over of $444 from last year, went locally this year to the Open Hands Ministry. A special fund raising dinner, organized by Louise Craft, raised $1354 for the Camp Crestfield Building Fund.

Nicaragua Trip - 2011

As you may have heard, a group of our Senior High Youth will be going to Nicaragua on a mission trip this coming summer. But what exactly is this mission trip about? We hear about “Mission,” and often our first thought is “conversion.” Historically, the actual “mission” has been to convert people to Christianity and in many cases, even to this day, many Christian churches are traveling to far off lands in an effort to turn people to their own denomination because they believe that this is the “only road to salvation.” Well, I don’t think I need to tell you that this view of mission is not our group’s view of mission.

Although we will be performing challenging and at times back-braking labor, our “mission” is to experience personal transformation and growth. We know that we are not going to “save” anyone, and in most cases, we’re not even going to make a big difference in the Nicaraguan people’s lives. However, it is going to transform our own lives. It is going to challenge our views and our status quo. Our “mission” is to learn about poverty, about injustice, about oppression, about world politics and US policy issues. We will meet the Nicaraguan people and live among them and with them, even if for only a short period of time. We are going to attempt to reach an understanding of the challenges they face, but in the end, we will end up coming face to face with our own challenges. We will learn about these people’s strength and perseverance, and in the end, their deep faith! Yes, if anyone’s faith is going to be challenged, it is our very own! Our hope is that through these experiences, we will allow for the grace of God to take place in our lives and for the Kingdome of God to come to our world.

Like in past trips, we will be spending some time with the people of El Porvenir, the coffee cooperative that produces the very tasty organic coffee we sell at our church. These families have developed a great deal of love and gratitude for our church community and the assistance we have provided to them. They have become an important part of our lives as they teach us about the love of God and about humility.

This year our group will be working with CEPAD (the Council of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua). Our very own PC(USA) has delegates in Nicaragua who do their work through CEPAD. They will be accompanying us through our journey and developing their own relationship with the people of El Porvenir. We look forward to developing this relationship further ourselves.

Please pray for us. Pray that we will be open to experience God’s work in each of our hearts, that we will seek to transform our lives and our views of the world and that through this trip, we will continue to pave the paths to the Kingdom of God.

Calendar Year 2010 was another remarkable year of giving by members of Sixth Church. In the Table 1 below you will see that your Church and Community Committee disbursed $17,615 to mission programs this year, including the Session budget amount of $17,505 and $10 donated by Glenda Rosenberry from her aluminum recycling efforts. These mission projects included local cooperative ministries and food banks, Presbyterian concerns, youth oriented support, and international support. But that is not all. Sixth Church have provided another $11,926 in "extra mile" giving to the special Presbyterian-wide offerings offerings this past year. Added to the mission support in Table 1, that comes to $29,541. Although that amount is remarkable in itself, there is more.

Table 3 shows other benevolence giving amounts for 2010. First, there is the annual contribution to the greater church mission. Last year we gave $20,067 to the mission efforts of Pittsburgh Presbytery, Synod on the Trinity, and the General Assembly. Next, there is the support we provide through the annual budget of two organizations that are important to the message of Sixth Church: More Light and Covenant Network. In addition, our Deacons also provide separate benevolence giving. This adds to $23,749 for a total of Sixth Presbyterian Church benevolence giving for 2010 of $53,290.

We would be remiss to not also recognize the record collection of $6593 from the annual East Hills CROP Walk. Our own Sue Koehler has led this event for years. Although this amount cannot be attributed exclusively to Sixth Church, it would not have been so successful without Sue's efforts and the giving of our members.

If we add the CROP Walk amount to the we see that, either directly or indirectly, Sixth Church was responsible for nearly $59,883 of benevolence giving in 2010. This is a remarkable achievement. Yet, it is typical of Sixth Church and reflects our continuing concerns about hunger, education, and social justice issues at home and abroad. Not only do we recognize the needs, but we put our faith into action.

Holocaust Service

On Sunday August 29 we had the privilege of hearing a stirring service presentation called "Who are These Germans". The presenters were Susanne Ortner and Fritz Ottenheimer. Fritz is a Squirrel Hill resident who escaped Germany in 1939 as a boy. Susanne is young Christian German woman who plays Klezmer music on her clarinet and came to the US four years ago on a grant to promote international understanding through her music and Fritz's memories. She has since gone back to and returned from Germany to marry Pittsburgh jazz pianist, Tom Roberts, Tom accompanied her in this service. With Susanne setting the mood with her music, Fritz related several moving anecdotes from his life, including the loss of the family business, her father's imprisonment and later release, their escape to the US, and some war stories. Not all of these memories were negative, however, since at one point some German POWs that he was escorting to a camp probably saved his life with a warning about a trolley wire across the road that could have decapitated him. Susanne related how young Germans knowledge and ultimate shame regarding the Holocaust have changed with her generation.

Nicaragua Travelers Return

After an eventful 10 or 11 days, 8 of us returned safely to Pittsburgh. Sara and Chris were staying over until the 30th to attend an anniversary celebration in Sara's family. Due to a 2 1/2 hour delay leaving Managua on Friday, June 25, we missed our connecting flight from Miami to Chicago. The American Airline agent worked diligently to arrange flight for us back to Pittsburgh. As it worked out, Fred was able to get a flight in the afternoon; Pam, Carol, and I were booked on an evening flight thorough Charlotte, and Cliff, Nora, Al, and Brenda were put up in Miami for the night before returning on Saturday. This was only the last of a series of adventures that we experienced on our trip. I will start the narration and others will take up the tales later.

Even our flight to Managua foretold of the adventures to come. Our flight from Miami to Managua was delayed about 75 minutes before takeoff due to a malfunctioning light. Then, as we were about to land we had to circle for about 15 minutes while a thunderstorm in Managua dissipated a bit. We landed hard in rain and, we thought, hydroplaned down the runway. Sara, Chris and a van were there to meet us. A wonderful dinner, mush appreciated, was waiting for us at the Aloha Hotel, run by Sara's sister, Nora and husband Andrea (Andrew).

I will leave the events of our day in Managua for others to tell and move on to our trip on Thursday to El Porvenir. We left Managua late morning with a pickup truck and a large van and stopped in Leon to have lunch. Then a series of events (some might say miraculous) began to occur. Someone at the restuarant told Chris and Sara that the road they intended to take was washed out by the previous night's thunderstorm and was impassable. An alternative route was suggested, so off we went along this other route, not fully sure of ourselves. At what turned out to be the correct turnoff, we stopped to get additional directions at a small store. A bus pulled in behind us and a man got off and wanderer over to the conversation. When he heard what was being said, he announced that he knew Renne, our El Porvenir contact, and knew how to get to El Porvenir. He, Marvin by name, volunteered to ride with us to direct us to the right place. Off we went again along a dirt road for some time before coming to a turnoff. By now the daily thunderstorm was beginning to roll in. Fearing the storm and the fact that part of the road from hereon was the bed of a river, our van driver, William, and Sara decided to stop there. Chris, along with Al and Fred, went on ahead in the truck to find the tractor and wagon that we hoped was waiting for us somewhere up the road. We had not been able to make any communication with El Porvenir for several days, so were not sure where or when the wagon would be.

Moments after Chris left in the truck, the storm hit and within minutes the river bed was a raging torrent. After a half hour, the rain subsided and suddenly a motorcycle came up the road. The cyclist told us that he had seen Chris and the wagon. The wagon arrived, we piled in and endured a bouncy trip up the mountain, taking about 2 hours to do so. We arrived in El Porvenir at just about dusk, which was good because the tractor had no lights. We set up our cots and mosquito nets, had dinner and settled in for the night in an open air, bur covered by a roof, veranda. Thus, ended our first day in El Porvenir.

Others will tell you about roosters, coffee plant, school, roadwork, a trip to repair to a truck, and trips to the hospital in future postings. Stay tuned, the adventures are just beginning.

Prayers for Peace In Homewood this Friday April 2nd

The House of Manna's Mission, Justice, and Peace Ministry invites the public, all faith communities, and community and civic leaders to join them this Friday, April 2nd (Good Friday), in spiritual solidarity praying for peace and non-violence in the community of Homewood-Brushton . Rev. Eugene Blackwell and Rev. Sheldon Sorge, the new Pastor to Pittsburgh Presbytery, will lead prayers for peace in the East End neighborhood. At 9:00 AM, the group will gather for fellowship at the Homewood Coliseum located at 7310 Frankstown Avenue, and line up along Frankstown and Homewood Avenues to pray at 10:15 AM. "Leadership Doesn't Happen Alone": Lecture by Global Links CoFounder

Kathleen Hower, cofounder and executive director of Global Links, will deliver a lecture titled "Leadership Doesn't Happen Alone" as recipient of the University of Pittsburgh's 2010 Johnson Institute Award for Exemplary Leadership.

Cost: FREE! But pre-registration requested (ethics@gspia.pitt.edu), and donations to Global Links will be accepted at the event.

Hower cofounded Global Links in 1989. Global Links recovers surplus medical materials from U.S. hospitals and makes them available to hospitals in developing countries. With the help of its loyal volunteers, many of them organized through Sixth by Jan Maxwell, Global Links has provided more than $160 million in critical medical aid to people in Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, and Nicaragua.

Notes from the March Meeting

Church & Community Committee Meeting Notes : 3/07/10

The Committee met in the parlor. Fifteen people were in attendance. The meeting opened with a prayer by Jane Fox.

Because of the late start due to the New Members’ Reception, the agenda was revised to discuss the Mission Funding allocation first.

Funding Allocations: A preliminary allocation schedule was presented for discussion by Chairperson Bill Beggs. After some discussion about the history of Sixth’s relationship with the Mars Home for Youths, the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, Camp Crestfield, and Neighborhood Academy, it was proposed and accepted by acclamation to renew the support of EECM, Neighborhood Academy, Mars Home for Youth, Camp Crestfield, and Goats for Gifts at the same level as 2009. The allowance for reimbursements for Neighborhood Academy lunches was increased to better represent expected needs. Allocation of most of the remaining funds will be determined at the next meeting.

Additional discussion, initiated by Sue Koehler, centered on a policy of dealing with missions that might be supported both by C&C Committee and an appeal to the congregation. In particular, the Lazarus Fund and Disaster Assistance, like for Haiti and Chile, fall in this category. This discussion will be continued at the next meeting.

Finally, the Committee recommends that a proposal be presented to Session to offer the congregation an opportunity to support a Chile Disaster Assistance campaign.

Correspondence, Announcements and Updates:

• Thank You Notes were received from More Life and First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood for our contributions.
• Newsletters have been received from EECM, Greater Pgh Community Food Bank, GASP, Mission Mosaic (Presbytery Disaster Assistance), Neighborhood Academy, and Loaves and Fishes.

• Appeals for support were received from EECM “Have a Heart for Hunger” campaign, Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute (PPI), St. Margaret’s Foundation. The committee had no interest in St. Margaret’s. Mary Louise has expressed in supporting PPI, so the Committee agreed to consider it at our next meeting.

A part of the EECM Hunger campaign is a benefit campaign pancake dinner at Pamela’s in the Strip. Those interested should call 412-3611-5549 or E-mail kates@eecm.org. The Committee recommended putting an announcement in the bulletin.

UPDATES:

Neighborhood Academy: After cancellations twice in February, our people served lunch at Neighborhood Academy on March 3rd. Sue reported that the meal was well received and the kids very respectful.

Peacemaking Special Offerings: Nora Johnson reported that the offering will be received in late May or early June.

Nicaragua Adult Mission Trip: Bill Beggs reported that participants are getting their immunization shots and taking Spanish lessons. The trip is scheduled for June 15 through 25.

The next meeting will be late May or early June, depending on the Church calendar.

Neighborhood Academy: Lunch is On!

The February 11th lunch at the Neighborhood Academy was canceled due to the horrendous weather situation and, not insignificantly, school was canceled.

Our next lunch date at the Academy is WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3rd. Many of the people planning to help in Feb. are still involved in March. But this opportunity is open to others! Does anyone wish to volunteer for the March date? Please contact Diana Wood!

Dr. Donna Riley, who used to be a member of Sixth, has been named GLBTA Educator of the Year by the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals. Donna serves as an Associate Professor of Engineering at Smith College, Northampton, Mass.

Open Hand Ministries - Saturday Feb 6th

The next work day for Open Hand Ministries has been set for Saturday February 6th. Typically, the work day begins at 9:00 AM, meeting in Garfield at an urban garden at the corner of Wicklow St. and Cornwall St. Future work days are planned also for the first Saturdays in March, April and May.

Aldora's Letter in Post-Gazette re Braddock

Grow Braddock

UPMC will quit admitting patients to Braddock hospital shortly. But it is time to grow in Braddock, not go from Braddock.

Does UPMC not know that this is a community on its way back up? Its citizens have fought and won the battle to keep the first Carnegie Library open, have planted urban community gardens, and a new green industry has just announced plans to locate in Braddock.

This hospital serves the greater Monongahala Valley, is one mile from The Waterfront, across the river from Kennywood, and has plenty of real estate available for expansion.

Why has UPMC underfunded needed services and then systematically and egregiously eliminated or relocated these services in crowded and distant locations?

Does UPMC not know that public transportation is poor-to-none and its parking garages are expensive? Has any UPMC executive ever used public transportation to get to one of its facilities and know how much time and effort it takes?

Does UPMC not know that there is more to health care than provision? Health care is teaching from the cradle to the grave. Has UPMC forgotten the first rule in medicine is do no harm?

UPMC should be called to account for the harm it is doing to these communities and expand Braddock hospital and its services.

Prayers for the People of Haiti

Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti and all those who have held Haiti close in their hearts and work.

Sixth's mission giving to Haiti has been focused on recent years on Covenant Hospital (now Village Partners International) and, more recently, Partners in Progress.

Funds from the Presbyterian Church's One Great Hour of Sharing will go immediately to help with response and recovery in Haiti. Sixth participates in this special offering, and so your gifts will be used to help the people of Haiti in the coming days.

Woohoo! Spaghetti for a Good Cause!

First Presbyterian of Edgewood (AKA "Mike's Church") is planning a spaghetti dinner later this month to raise money for the Lazarus Fund. Currently, the plan is to hold the dinner on Friday, January 22nd, from 4:30 to 7:30PM in Edgewood Presbyterian's social room.

Cost will be $7.50 for adults, $5.00 for children and free for children under 3. All proceeds will go to the Lazarus fund.

The goal is to have at least 30 people come from each of the participating congregations: Edgewood, Sixth, Waverly, Mt. Hope, and Hillcrest. Please spread the word to friends and neighbors.

The Neighborhood Academy is the 2010 Peace Partner Award Recipient for its peace building contributions to Youth Services! The Academy is being recognized for its "long standing commitment to developing the mind, body and spirit of students and for working to break the cycle of poverty and violence."

The Peace Partner Awards are part of the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime's (CVVC) Peace-It-Together Community Initiative (PITCI). The Peace Partner Awards honor those persons and organizations who, through their work or service, help individuals, families, and communities heal from violence and crime and who embody the spirit of PITCI by resolving conflict, restoring relationships, and building peaceful communities in the Greater Pittsburgh Region. The Neighborhood Academy was nominated by Diana Wood, who coordinates Sixth's lunch brigade volunteers at the Academy.

The 2010 Peace-It-Together Community Initiative Reception and Peace Partner Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:30 PM at the Regional Enterprise Tower in downtown Pittsburgh.

'Zombies' Protest Closing of UPMC-Braddock

Zombies in movie makeup, pushing hospital IV stands and portraying what they said will be the results of corporate greed that caused UPMC to suck the life out of Braddock by closing the hospital there, marched on the nonprofit's Downtown corporate headquarters at noon today.

"I couldn't make it to a hospital in time because UPMC is closing Braddock," Emily Gorda, 29, of Braddock, one of the zombies in crusty gray makeup and a backless hospital gown, said explaining the symbolism during the march from the Greyhound Bus Terminal to the U.S. Steel Tower on Grant Street. "Our community is on life support. UPMC should be ashamed."

When the dozen zombie marchers reached the front of the skyscraper -- which houses UPMC offices -- their ranks swelled to about 40 protesters who held a mock UPMC board meeting on the sidewalk.

Filmmaker and Braddock resident Tony Buba, who worked on George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" horror movies, said the demonstrators were trying to draw attention not only to the closing of Braddock Hospital, scheduled for Jan. 31, but also the need for health care coverage and the closing of community hospitals, especially in poor and minority communities.

The peacemaking overture to General Assembly for which 6th was a cosponsor was passed at the Pittsburgh Presbytery level.... The panel discussion held at the seminary on the role of faith in our stance on the death penalty drew a small but interested audience..... CROP Walk contributions increased by 10+% from last year....The Neighborhood Academy has been nominated for a Peace Partner Award through the Center for Victims of Violent Crimes.... Concerned action and awareness on the situation in Braddock/closing of the UPMC hospital there goes on (the Tribune-Review has been a good partner in keeping this in front of the public eye)....Next lunch at the Neighborhood Academy is February 4th....Volunteers at Global Links are having *fun* while doing good! -- and the high level of participation has earned 'points' that may enable 6th to send medical packets to Nicaragua as part of our developing relationship with the community of El Porvenir....The Committee is interested in learning more about anti-sweatshop legislation; the law was initially introduced as the Decent Working Conditions and Fair Competition Act..... Fellowship Hour (AKA Coffee & Cookie Time!)

Sixth shares a time of fellowship in the chapel after each worship service. Because we're good Presbyterians, we've tried to make that job one that's both decent AND in 'good order' by having each church committee take on the responsibility of finding volunteers for a month o' Sundays. Volunteers are not necessarily from that committee, but the committee makes sure the month is covered. Then -- because we *are* orderly! -- Shirley sends general instructions. These are not rules, but guidelines so that if you've never 'done fellowship' before you have some sense of how to go about it. For instance, Rich generally takes care of the coffee part of it! Hurrah!

The Church & Community Committee's next month o' Sundays for Fellowship is May 2010. We have three volunteers so far: Carol B. for May 2nd; Fred for May 9th; and Maggie for May 23rd.

If you know of anyone who might like to sign up, please show them the sign-up sheet in the chapel or contact Shirley. After someone puts his or her name on the sign-up sheet, Shirley will email the instructions to them.

Building Our Relationship with El Porvenir

The youth of Sixth Church traveled to Nicaragua in the summer of 2008 to work with the people of El Porvenir, a coffee cooperative whose coffee many of us continue to buy and enjoy. Adults from Sixth are developing the relationship through a mission trip planned for late June of 2010 (tentative dates: June 17-27).

Sara and Chris Berg came to the Church + Community Committee meeting this Sunday to distribute packets (of information AND forms) for adults who are interested in going and to answer questions. Sara stressed the physical nature of this trip. El Porvenir is at least three hours from a major city hospital; located at the top of a remote volcano, El Porvenir is accessed by dry river bed and rough trails. The work that the mission group will do will be physical: carrying heavy loads, feeding animals, weeding, moving rocks, etc.

The number of people who can go on the trip will be limited primarily by two factors: (1) transportation -- how many people can be safely accomodated in the type of vehicle needed and available for the trek to El Porvenir; and (2) number of translators -- there must be one translator for every 4 non-Spanish speakers.

If you are interested in going, please contact Sara or Chris Berg, Fred O'Leary, Peter Kaplan, Cliff or Nora Johnson, or Brenda Flores. Sara needs to have a solid count of the number of participants by January 9th; your initial deposit for the trip will be due in early February.

The Church + Community Committee voted to allocate some of this year's remaining funds directly to El Porvenir in support of their work and acknowledgement of our relationship with this community.

Gospel Weekend featured in "News from Presbytery"

The Good News from Sixth Presbyterian & Bethesda United Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh: Sixth Presbyterian Church and Bethesda United Presbyterian Church welcomed more than 250 people to worship together on October 25 at the close of a rousing and spirited gospel weekend at Sixth led by Dr. Anthony Leach, professor of music from Penn State University.

Nearly 100 people sang all day on Saturday, learning nine anthems and songs, and enjoying lunch through a grant from the Amos 5:24 Task Force. Singers formed a gospel choir for Sixth's Sunday worship, including folks from Bethesda, Bethel and East Liberty churches and others.

Rev. Eugene Blackwell preached and Rev. Karen Battle joined Rev. Mary Louise McCullough of Sixth to lead a dynamic worship service, all made possible through a Transformation grant from Pittsburgh Presbytery. The weekend, especially worship, was truly transformational!

Christmas Joy Offering

The Christmas Joy Offering is one of the four special offerings designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to provide congregations direct ways of supporting specific causes. Half of the contributions to the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers and their spouses and families. The other half supports Presbyterian-related racial/ethnic education through the General Assembly Council.

Sixth is grateful to Diana Wood for her work in coordinating our congregation's opportunity to participate in this annual offering.

More Babies!

Sixth has been blessed by the birth of lots of beautiful babies in our congregation this fall.

And guess what? That 6th 'fertile touch' extends to our contributions to the Goats For Gifts program, too! ;-)

The program's administrator writes: "Sorry about her backside, but yea, she's pregnant! The firstborn must be given to another survivor. So many thanks, again, to your thoughtful congregation."

Goats for Gifts is a volunteer organization; our contribution goes fully to the purchase of goats for survivors of the Rwanda genocide. Sixth's giving has provided 25 more goats this year.

While young Colin, above, holds one of Jim's bowls, Jim is perhaps best known for his face jugs, which he makes to "pay homage to [his] ancestors, those who survived the Middle Passage."

Neighborhood Academy Lunch: Chili With a Dash of Love

"We recently orchestrated another very successful group effort on behalf of the NA students and staff. Brenda F., Pam H. and I met at the church Monday evening and prepared enough chili for 50 people and prepared 8 loaves of Italian bread--buttered--for the entire group. Carol and Bill B. brought to the church on Sunday enough chili for 50. Then on Tuesday morning I heated up all the chili, and Louise F., Jenn F-G, Jonas and I loaded the car, drove to the school, unloaded, and served the meal along with a large tossed salad, apple juice and brownies (by Trish C.) and cookies (by Michael S.). Checkers joined us at the school (where she had already had a personal tour) and helped serve.

Just about everything was eaten. Actually, only some apple juice was left! Students and staff were most appreciative. If you want reimbursement for the costs of food purchase, please fill out a request form in the office, clearly marking the purpose and submit it to Maggie.

Our next lunch is THURSDAY FEBRUARY 4. Please notify me if you know already that you would like to help.

Sixth's annual Stewardship Sunday is coming up on November 8th!

Here is the information about the Church and Community to be included for that day:

The Church and Community committee is the mission arm of Sixth Church. Our committee’s work allows the gifts of volunteerism and financial support from the members and friends of Sixth Church to reach local and global communities and people who need our help.

Our committee selects organizations that may need financial or volunteer support to better serve others for a mission that is aligned with Sixth’s own mission. These include organizations focused on hunger relief efforts, local cooperative ministries, and social justice organizations.

Our committee coordinates the More Light Presbyterians initiative at Sixth Church, working on inclusiveness and equality issues for lesbian, gay and transgendered persons.

Our committee has worked with and supported organizations like Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, East End Cooperative Ministries, Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Neighborhood Academy, Mars Home for Youth, Camp Crestfield (Youth Scholarship Fund), Lazarus Fund of the Pittsburgh Presbytery, Just Harvest, Church World Services, CROP, Goats for Gifts: For Rwandan Women Affected by the Genocide, Open Hands Ministry and Global Links to help to provide aid and help where needed for the people these organizations serve.

Our committee communicates through e-mail, a weblog, bulletin announcements, the Sixth Sense newsletter, word of mouth, and a few committee meetings, typically about four a year.

What's the Neigbhorhood Academy? In their very own words: "Our curriculum and program intentionally focuses on providing a college-preparatory education to low-income students. Our unique approach includes an extended school day (8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.), very small classes, close and ongoing communication with families and a college preparatory curriculum that culminates in senior seminars in the humanities and sciences. At The Neighborhood Academy, we afford to low income students a private school, college preparatory education that they would not otherwise be able to obtain. To help our students to succeed academically, we also provide counseling, transportation, three meals a day and assistance with emergency needs like medical care. The breadth of our services to students is based on the belief that low-income students face unique challenges and need much more than “school” to learn."

SmallWorks Benefit Concert: Tunes and Televisions!

Flood Damage Relief: Second United Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg

When heavy rainstorms blew through Pittsburgh on June 17, a number of churches in the Pittsburgh Presbytery sustained significant damage. In particular, Second United Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg suffered extensive damage to their Fellowship Hall, kitchen, two bathrooms and the downstairs hallway. They need to raise $24,880 to purchase materials and are asking for the prayers of their brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the Presbytery, and for any funding or labor that could help them through their repairs.

Our federal elected representatives have gone home for the summer without enacting health insurance reform. Worse, it's questionable whether or not they'll ever be able to break through the ties of money and influence that bind them. I sat around all last week stewing helplessly about this. This morning, as the weather threatens to stew us all in fact, I pulled myself together, and e-mailed and called Senators Specter and Casey and Congressman Doyle. My letter follows to show that I really did get in touch with them. I

If you're contacting them as well, do let me know. I'm finding it very discouraging that the legislation under discussion so far has moved far from anything that might make a difference to all the un- and underinsured in this country or to the high costs of health care, and that the mindless yelling of bought-off crowds seems to be so influential. It's hard to be enthusiastic about what's being proposed at this point. So I'd like to hear if others of you, just to get a sense of a common interest. Thanks so much!

Please work to get us real health insurance reform. So far, it doesn't look good. It looks like the vested interests, namely big health insurance and big pharma, are having their way. They're bankrolling mob pressure against any meaningful change, and they've got the "Gang of Six", led by Senator Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, batting around in their wet paper bag unable to do anything at all.

In fact, I heard Sen. Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Committee, say: "We've got a good health care system." What? What country is Senator Grassley living in? Canada maybe, where they do have a good health care system? Meanwhile, Kent Conrad, a Democrat on Sen. Baucus' committee, is proposing a health care co-op system. Please.

What we need is a system that will serve everyone and will save money in the long run. Single-payer health care does that. Why not work vigorously to educate your constituency about the facts of single-payer? There has not been enough information because everyone is so frightened of what the well-funded noise machine will do. Please break out of the mold and bring us a real solution to our overpriced, ineffective, and corrupt health care system.

The New York Times posted an interesting chart on how people (over 15 years old) in the US spend their time on an average day.

It's fascinating (in ways that may or may not be healthy!). You can pick a random time -- let's say 6:50 PM -- and see the percentage of Americans who would normally be engaged in a given activity at that time. At 6:50 PM, 3% of Americans are playing sports. 1% are voluntering, while another 1% are engaged in religious activities (does blogging for a church committee count?). 24% of Americans, at 6:50 PM, would typically be watching television or a movie.

Allegheny County Council Approves Non-Bias Ordinance

Sixth's Session wrote to Rich Fitzgerald of the Allegheny County Council to express our support for the establishment of a county ordinance that forbids discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. That bill -- and an accompanying move to establish a Human Relations Commission -- was approved yesterday.

Session's letter noted that, since 1978, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has had a policy of supporting exactly this type of anti-discrimination ordinance; the General Assembly of that year agreed that “vigilance must be exercised…to initiate and support federal, state, and local legislation that prohibits discriminating against persons on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing and public accommodation.”

EECM Food Pantry Expands Hours to Meet Growing Need

The East End Cooperative Ministry will expand the hours of its food pantry beginning Monday, according to a press release today.

The pantry, which currently operates for two hours in the afternoon every weekday at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, will expand to include morning hours from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Monday through Friday.

"This dramatic step is being taken in response to growing requests for assistance," the press release said.

Pantry clients are encouraged to use the morning hours to discuss additional household needs with the food services case manager, as well as to obtain food.

The East End Cooperative Ministry will also offer more substantial meals and expand the hours of its soup kitchen beginning Monday, said Development Director David Dix. It will operate from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Current hours are 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

PC(USA) Moderator in Action

Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow will speak Saturday evening at the New Wilmington Mission Conference (held July 18-25: see http://nwmcmission.org/ for details). Reyes-Chow is currently serving as PC(USA) Moderator. An ordained minister since 1995, he is a California native and the founding pastor of Mission Bay Community Church, a new church development of San Francisco Presbytery. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a special major in Asian American Studies, Sociology, and Religion and from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Bruce has served the PC(USA) over the years as a preacher, worship leader, and keynoter.

Bruce is "firmly convicted that life is just chaotic and that the key to finding security amidst the chaos is not to put life in a rigidly controlled box, but to embrace and claim God's presence in the ambiguity-a difficult way to live, but a way that honors the authenticity of our lives and strengthens our relationship with God." Bruce is a prolific blogger and has a large social networking presence.

EECM expects to have 15 students who are heading off to college this fall and who will need a little TLC in the way of school/dorm supplies. The C+C Committee has agreed to be a sponsoring congregation for one of the students; Margaret Miller and Louise Ford have graciously volunteered to organize the contributions!

Priority items include: towels & washcloths, plastic shower caddy, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, twin extra long sheets, laundry basket, mesh laundry bag, and plastic clothes hangers. Other items needed include a 1" three-ring binder, stapler and staples, dry-erase board for door (with markers), highlighters, mechanical pencils, pens, sharpies, planner/organizer, spiral bound notebooks, and pocket folders.

Miscellaneous items that would be nice to include: tissues, liquid hand soap, roll of quarters, and a $25 calling card.

Congregations are asked to collect and present the items to EECM in the laundry basket (of whatever appropriate size) by June 30th, if possible.

Tie the Knot

The program is called Tie the Knot and is symbolized by white ribbons with a single knot tied in the middle - a simple but meaningful way to say that everyone should have the right to tie the knot. Our Sixth Church More Light Sunday is fast approaching and promises to be a great one! All in one jam-packed day of excitement we’ll have our More Light Sunday Worship Service, a team of Sixth Church folks marching in the Pride Parade, and a Sixth Church booth at PrideFest. Pride Awareness parade at Noon from Grant St at 1st Ave to Liberty Ave at 7th St

Our worship service that day will include a celebration with uplifting music, a video/photo slideshow, and a procession of signs proclaiming personal expressions on themes of unity, pride and connectedness.

The parade and booth will feature banners, signs, new Sixth Church More Light t-shirts, refrigerator magnets and ribbons in support of same-sex marriage legislation. We’ll also be showing off one of our two new More Light flags.

The parade starts at from Grant St at 1st Ave, moves onto the Boulevard of the Allies, down to Stanwix St, and turning onto Liberty Avenue finishing at the stage at PrideFest on Liberty Ave at 7th St. BEST PARKING NOTE: First Avenue Parking Garage . Support for Healthcare Reform

At the 218th meeting of General Assembly (June 2008), Presbyterians adopted a recommendation supporting national health care reform, calling for advocacy and education that pursues “the goal of obtaining legislation that enacts single-payer, universal national health insurance as the program that best responds to the moral imperative of the gospel.”

As part of that work toward advocacy and education, Sixth Church is a proud sponsor of Healthcare: Human Right and Moral Imperative, a regional conference organized by the Western PA Coalition for Single Payer Healthcare. The conference will be held on Sunday, June 14th, from 1 PM till 5 PM at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in East Liberty/Highland Park.

The conference is free; a light lunch will be served at 1:00, with the program beginning at 2:00. This is one of ten regional conferences around the country being supported by the Presbyterian Church USA. On Tuesday, April 14, volunteers from Sixth will be preparing and serving lunch at the Neighborhood Academy school. We usually prepare the meals on the afternoon before or the morning prior to 10:30, and then some of us transport and serve the food at the school. This typically involves the time between 10:30 and 1:30. Please let Diana know if you can help with the cooking or serving.

Usually eight to ten individuals get involved, and the school now has heating ovens so the food can be kept warm!

Some notes about the March 14th Pittsburgh Presbytery meeting and proposed amendment 08B

At the March 14th Pittsburgh Presbytery meeting, a motion was made to extend the time for those who wished to speak on behalf of or against passing amendment 08B beyond the 20 minutes allocated. The motion was voted down, and I did not get the chance to present what I had prepared to say that day. Below is what I would have said:

My name is Fred O’Leary, and I worship and serve at Sixth Presbyterian Church in Squirrel Hill.

I’ve had the good fortune over the past few years to study with folks who have researched much about the history of the Presbyterian Church. I’ve learned about the past 150 years, and our Church’s struggles to move beyond prior literal interpretation of the bible that excluded women and people of color from serving God in a meaningful way. I look around this sanctuary with pride and I see the very clear and wonderful results of having moved beyond those forms of discrimination that tarnished our denomination. One day my hope is that we’ll be able to look back on this issue with that same pride.

It’s been my observation that it’s very rare when someone actually hears the sometimes quiet whisper that is a call to serve God, and often even rarer when one responds to that call. We in this room can probably each remember the first time we recognized that call.

That call sometimes goes out to God’s followers who are excluded from serving by our current Book of Order.

That call sometimes goes out to beloved children of God like our own Reverend Brent Dugan of Ben Avon, who was so loved by his congregation there when his life was tragically cut short in November 2006. In my opinion, this sort of tragedy is precisely the sort of thing we all need to be seeking to eliminate by bringing dialog on these difficult issues forward, and working to end the exclusion of some from a call to serve. Never again should anyone have to feel so torn between their belief in and desire to serve God, and the person that God created them to be, that he or she should desire to end their own life.

I’d like to close by reading two short poems to you.

The first one is some words that may be familiar to many of you: ‘Those who are called to ordained service in the church, by their assent to the constitutional questions for ordination and installation, pledge themselves to live lives obedient to Jesus Christ the Head of the Church, striving to follow where he leads through the witness of the Scriptures, and to understand the Scriptures through the instruction of the Confessions. In so doing, they declare their fidelity to the standards of the Church.’ I share these poetic words with you today, and ask you to think of them on their own, and not with regard to what the words they are intended to
replace.

The second comes from the 40th Psalm. I’ve found it helpful in my contemplations in preparation for today’s meeting: ‘I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods. You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts towards us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted.’

May God’s grace be with all of us today.

Pittsburgh Presbytery Votes on Amendment 08b

Just got back from the special meeting of Presbytery, where the final vote was against affirmation of Amendment 08B to the Presbyterian Book of Order. The proposed amendment, which focused on a person's hearing of a call rather than a person's sexuality, was defeated by a vote of 206 to 105.

Single payer health care is an issue that has been in the forefront of Pittsburgh Presbytery. In fact the General Assembly 2008 passed a resolution on single payer health care that was initiated by Pittsburgh Presbytery.

Amendments to the Book of Order Proposed

The Presbyterian Church USA’s 218th General Assembly sent ten amendments and four ecumenical statements to all 173 Presbyteries for prayerful consideration and yes/no votes. The changes include a proposed amendment that would delete the current paragraph G-6.0106b in the Book of Order — which requires church officers to live in “fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness”—and replace it with a new G-6.0106b (see below). The proposed new G-6.0106b ties ordination decisions more closely to assent to the ordination vows currently in the church’s Book of Order without singling out a sexual conduct standard.

The Pittsburgh Presbytery will hold its vote on these amendments and statements on Saturday, March 14th at Northmont Presbyterian. Please keep the Presbytery and Sixth’s voting elders and ministers in your prayers.

Proposed New Language in Amendment 08-B:

Those who are called to ordained service in the church, by their assent to the constitutional questions for ordination and installation (W-4.4003), pledge themselves to live lives obedient to Jesus Christ the Head of the Church, striving to follow where he leads through the witness of the Scriptures, and to understand the Scriptures through the instruction of the Confessions. In so doing, they declare their fidelity to the standards of the Church. Each governing body charged with examination for ordination and/or installation (G-14.0240 and G-14.0450) establishes the candidate’s sincere efforts to adhere to these standards.

A New Era of Responsibility: Faith & Determination

"... For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends -- hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism -- these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. Please mark Sunday, February 15th, as the date of our next Church and Community Committee meeting. We'll meet in the Ridinger Room around 12:15 PM (however long it takes us to grab a cookie and a cup of coffee after worship and make it down the steps!).

By the time of this meeting, we should have an approved budget for 2009 and can begin to prioritize our work and funding for the year. In addition to deciding which organizations we want to give funding to and how much, we also need to start setting some priorities around volunteer efforts.

The Neighborhood Academy (lunches, study halls), Global Links (packing supplies), and the CROP Walk (walking, collecting sponsors) will continue to be areas of focused attention for volunteer efforts. What about key projects for the Muscles & Mops group? For More Light?

GA Amendments & Ecumenical Statements

The 218th General Assembly sent ten amendments and four ecumenical statements to all Presbyteries for prayerful consideration and yes/no votes. They affect the life and ministry of our churches and merit our full attention. Click here to read the full text of these amendments and statements.

The section, "On Amending G-6.0106b, G-14.0240, and G-14.0450 (Item 05-09)", addresses the elimination of some exclusionary language regarding ordination and installation, which is particularly of interest to Sixth Church and other More Light churches.

As Pittsburgh Presbytery considers the proposed amendments to the Book of Order and Ecumenical Statements, six listening and discussion sessions have been arranged by an Advisory Committee of Pittsburgh Presbytery. Members of the Advisory Committee will attend each session to facilitate discussion, record questions and summarize comments shared. It is hoped that church members, officers and ministers will participate in these sessions as preparation for the Presbytery vote on these pending matters in spring 2009.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

EECM’s 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
Sunday, January 18, at 3:30 pm
Eastminster Presbyterian Church

This January marks the 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration to be held by EECM and the Council of Congregations. It is the only time each year when all of the congregations come together in an interfaith worship service.

The service will be held on Sun., Jan. 18, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 250 North Highland Ave. Music performed by several groups and individuals will begin at 3:30 pm. The Worship Service will begin with a Congregational Role Call at 4 pm. Bishop David Zubic, of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese, will speak.

Prior to the worship service, Bill Wharton, ‘the Sauce Boss’, will play and sing spicy Florida blues, while cooking gumbo for all. Lunch will begin at 1:30 pm, in Eastminster Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall. There’ll also be a vegetarian soup. The suggested donation for the lunch is $8/ person over 12 years of age.

2008 Allocations: A Look at the Pie

LOL! OK, at Sue's request, here's my attempt to post the pie chart on the blog.

How 'bout them slices, eh? And the little square raindrops where a legend to the chart used to be.... It looks better as a powerpoint slide, promise.

This pie shows how the Church + Community's funding pot was allocated this year.

The light blue slice shows the portion of our budget that went to local cooperative ministries (EECM, Wilkinsburg).

The royal blue slice is the portion that went to local hunger relief (Just Harvest, EECM Food Pantry, Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank).

The teal slice is the portion that went to Presbyterian mission efforts: Church World Services, Presbyterian Disaster Relief, Camp Crestfield, Malawi Partnership, and the Lazarus Fund.

The pea green slice is for local social justice efforts at the Mars Home for Youth and the Neighborhood Academy.

The gray slice shows support for the people of developing countries through gifts to Global Links, support for the CROP walkers, Goats for Gifts (Rwanda), and the March for Darfur.

There's a very slender black slice to represent the amount remaining in our budget.

The CROP Walk envelopes have now all been turned in, and Sue Koehler proudly reports that Sixth Presbyterian Church walkers collected donations totaling $4,064, the largest East End church contribution by a mile!

Congratulations and a big round of applause for all the walkers and donors.

Lunch at the Neighborhood Academy

Diana reports that Friday's lunch at the Neighborhood Academy was "enthusiastically devoured."

Many thanks to all those who helped: Sue Koehler, Louise Craft, Carol and Bill Beggs, Michael Schrecengost, Dave Wood, Jan Fisher, Jim McDowell, Larry VanDyke and Louise Ford. And very special thanks (and a round of applause) for the woman who pulled it all together: Diana Wood.

Diana will be proctoring the NA study hours tomorrow (Tuesday, 5:30 to 7:30 PM). That's a volunteer opportunity open to all, so please let Diana know if you're interested.

The next Sixth-in-the-Neighborhood-Academy is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11. Cooks and servers are needed -- just let Diana know if you can help out. We have funds to help reiumburse the cost of the food!

EECM Food Pantry

Excerpts from the story (including quotes from Mary Louise applauding the wisdom of keeping the program alive):

"The House of Hope -- the program in Braddock that helps pregnant women who are working to overcome addictions -- will continue operating, but eventually it will be moved....."

"Word was spreading and hopefully the outpouring of support caused this change," said the Rev. Mary Louise McCullough, pastor of Sixth Presbyterian Church in Squirrel Hill. "It's wise on the part of these folks at UPMC to realize that this is a facility that should not go."

After learning of UPMC's initial plan to close House of Hope, the Rev. McCullough sought to persuade churches to donate money to keep the program open for a few months until alternative funding could be found.
She also spoke of the planned closing from her pulpit, which prompted leaders of her church to write letters on behalf of the program to board members of UPMC and Heritage Health Foundation, the charitable arm of UPMC Braddock.

"We so often are angry and upset and think there's nothing we can do about things," she said. "Sometimes you lose the sense that people will actually respond. But I'm very happy and I'm sure the people in my church who were involved will be very happy.""

Jesus, The Bible, and Homosexuality

Starting January 4th, Sixth's adult Sunday School class will discuss Jack Roger's Jesus, The Bible, and Homosexuality: Explode the Myths, Heal the Church.

Ever found yourself tongue-tied trying to explain why we're a More Light Congregation, even though you know in your heart and soul it's what you believe is right and just? This class will give us all a chance to explore together the way the Bible does (and does not) talk about homosexuality and a faith-filled life.

Class begins at 9:50 AM in the Parlor and runs for four weeks: January 4, 11, 18, and 25.

Rally for House of Hope: December 11, 2008

On Thursday, December 11th, a rally will be held in front of UPMC Braddock to protest UPMC's decision to close the House of Hope. The rally is expected to run from 11:15 AM till 12:45 PM.

House of Hope was designed to help addicted, homeless women who are pregnant or new mothers. It offers a small-group (only five clients at a time) residence setting for 90-day stays, during which the women get treatment and counseling for their addiction. Their babies get to stay with them during their treatment stay.

UPMC has announced its intention to close House of Hope on January 2nd as a cost-cutting move.

Care betrayal

To those at UPMC who are closing House of Hope, I know these are difficult economic times. However, as I read about all the new projects that UPMC has money for, I cannot for the life of me see why keeping House of Hope would put such a strain on UPMC's budget.

If indeed it is true that UPMC or its foundation did not have sufficient funds available to continue to support House of Hope, this surely is no excuse for keeping the annual budget a secret. Perhaps some other group could try to undertake supporting it.

I know that the hospitals that make up UPMC's facilities here in Pittsburgh were, for the most part, started by members of various religious communities. This seems like a betrayal of this caring impulse.

Because many of our mission efforts have centered on the needs in Haiti, I thought you might find this article about Isabel's work interesting! Isabel is my cousin's daughter.....

Amid the mixing bowls and measuring cups in this East Knoxville home, Isabel Deeter measures flour, cracks eggs and melts chocolate. Then the 10-year-old adds the most important ingredient of all - compassion. It's found in abundance in Isabel's kitchen, and it looks a lot like cookies.

Opportunities at Neighborhood Academy

LUNCHTIME MEALS: Diana met with Neighborhood Academy's Development Director and Director of Administration. The school now has an enrollment of approximately 89; parents are now divided into teams, with each team responsible for a certain number of dinners throughout the year. The Academy's greatest need this year for non-parental supporters is to prepare and serve lunches.

Diana is proposing that volunteers from Sixth serve lunch three times over the coming year: FRIDAY DECEMBER 12, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11 AND MONDAY APRIL 6. We will need food preparers and food servers who would meet at the school and serve the students and staff: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, which encompasses two lunch periods. Sample menus are available.

Please contact Diana and let her know if you are available to help with any of these dates.

STUDY PROCTORS. The NA is instituting a proctoring program during the students' study hours in the late afternoon. Since they have so many more students and the school values serious study, they would appreciate proctors who would supervise small classrooms where the students should be absolutely focused on their studies. Diana is interested in doing this, but needs another person who might be able to trade off with her so that each would go once every two weeks. Is there anyone out there who might be interested in this type of work? The time would be something like 4-6 or 4:30-6:30.

Jack Rogers on 'Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality'

Pittsburgh Presbytery's Task Force on Ministry with Sexual Minorities and More Light Presbyterians are sponsoring a mini-conference on October 12-13, 2008, with Dr. Jack Rogers, theologian and author of the book Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality: Explode the Myths, Heal the Church. Rogers is professor emeritus at San Francisco Theological Seminary, a former faculty member at Westminster College, and served as moderator of the 213th General Assembly.

The conference will be held at Camp Crestfield, with opening sessions at 4 PM on Sunday and closing on Monday at 4.

The committee voted this morning to provide funding to Presbytery's Lazarus Fund, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and Goats for Gifts.

In allocating our funds this way, the committee noted the deep need for Presbytery-wide support for the Lazarus Fund, whose budget well has run dry at a point in the year and the economy when many families are having an increasingly difficult time in covering costs of living. Sixth Church also dedicates the loose-plate offering collected on "fifth Sundays" to the Lazarus Fund.

Recent hurricanes have had a devastating effect on many. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is helping those recently hurt by Hurricane Ike, as well as people hurt through storm damages caused by Hurricanes Fay, Gustav, and Hanna.

Goats for Gifts helps women and children in Rwanda by providing goats as a means toward self-support (the goats provide both food and a source of income). Goats for Gifts is a remarkable organization for its lack of overhead costs, made possible through dedicated volunteer efforts.

Other entities that have received funding this year include Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, East End Cooperative Ministries, Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Neighborhood Academy, Mars Home for Youth, Camp Crestfield (scholarships), Presbytery's Malawi Partnership, Just Harvest, Church World Services, and the March for Darfur.

Global Links: Hurricane Relief

I know many of you saw the article in the paper this week about Global Links' important role in providing relief to the people of Cuba, who have been hit hard by late-summer hurricanes this year.

A little Pittsburgh nonprofit is about to play a big role in Cuban disaster relief.

Global Links, a Garfield-based medical relief organization, holds one of only a handful of federal licenses allowing legal humanitarian aid to Cuba.

To deal with the aftermath of two major hurricanes walloping the island nation in just more than a week, the World Health Organization asked Global Links to serve as a conduit in delivering medical supplies to the country.

Our committee is responsible for hosting the post-worship fellowship time in September. Fred has signed up for September 28th, but we need volunteers for September 7, 14, and 21.

March for Darfur

The Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition’s Destroyed Villages Project will hold a march and rally in downtown Pittsburgh on Sunday, May 18th. Each person marching will represent one of the 2,751 villages damaged or destroyed villages of Darfur and will carry a sign representing the people of that village. Fred O’Leary will be our point person, and all friends and members of Sixth Church are invited to participate.

We will gather at Freedom Corner (Centre & Crawford, just above the Mellon Arena) a little before 2 PM. Donations of $10 per participant are requested by the march organizers, and the Church and Community Committee will cover that cost for Sixth members/friends who are going to participate. Please let Fred know if you will be marching and let him know if you need a ride; he will submit your name and the payment to the march organizers so that your sign will be ready.
