Church & Community Committee Meeting Notes 05.31.09

The meeting opened with prayer. Thirteen people were in attendance.

During announcements and updates:

 Louise C. signed up to handle Fellowship/Post-Worship Reception on June 14, 2009 (More Light Sunday).
 Nora reported that the Peacemaking Offering would be collected across three Sundays.
 Session/House Committee is looking at issues related to recycling at Sixth.
 Concerns continue regarding PIIN’s organizational and communication skills.
 Healthcare Reform Conference: Session supports sponsorship, and the C+C Committee will contribute $100.
 The Youth (and committed adults) held a very successful fundraising dinner for their West Virginia Mission Trip. The Bergs are helping to coordinate a trip for adults to Porvenir in Nicaragua, some time in 2010. Members of the Committee are very excited about this opportunity.
 Global Links needs volunteers: June 2, July 7, August 4 (10 AM to Noon)
 Fred has reached out to the Presbytery Committee to determine status of Hazelwood partnership.
 Fred reported from the More Light Subcommittee on joyful plans for More Light Sunday. Margaret volunteered to take lead on white ribbon project.

In the ‘Discussion and Action’ section of the meeting:

o There’s an opportunity for leadership with and work for the Muscles & Mops subcommittee. Joe has led that group in the past year, and has devoted his time and energies to renovation of the church kitchen. He is now stepping down, and a new leader is needed. The Mars Home for Youth has painting needs: a minimum of five people, organized, to paint one of the cottages.

o The Neighborhood Academy lunches have been a success, but more volunteers needed. Sue spoke to the importance of continuing our commitment to this project. After some discussion, the Committee’s recommendation is that the number of lunches for the coming year stay at three. A suggestion was made that one of the current volunteers speak during worship as a Minute for Mission to alert others to this opportunity.

o The EECM is asking that the congregation pull together a College Send-Off Care Package/Basket for one of the 15 students they expect to send off to college this year. Margaret and Louise F. volunteered to coordinate the “gift tree” effort to collect items for the basket.

o Louise C. brought to the Committee’s attention the continued need for scholarship support at Camp Crestfield. Committee members noted that the deacons are a resource for children from Sixth who need a ‘campership,’ and that a Minute for Mission that alerts the Sixth Community to the availability of campership funds through the deacons or through Crestfield may be helpful. The Committee committed $2000 from the C+C funds to Crestfield.

o The Committee is interested in hearing about Anti-Sweatshop Legislation from Peter G.. Kit and Fred will try to arrange this for our next meeting.

o The Committee committed the bulk of its funding contributions, but agreed to hold slightly over $1000 in reserve to meet emergency needs in the fall. See enclosed funding chart. Fred and Kit will work with the Church Treasurer on allocation of those commitments across the coming months, so that the overall church budget is not hit all at once.

The meeting closed in prayer.
